On Journaling

4 November, 2009 Princess Raelynn

The topic I’d like to discuss today is something I do every day. Journaling. I don’t specifically write about my day or anything of that sort, but I write whatever I feel the need to write down. My “Field Journal” is a small notebook I carry with me everywhere. There’s nothing special about it, it’s just a green notebook with a ribbon page marker. Each day, or time I write, I put the date and whatever I needed to write. Sometimes I write small things that come to mind, lyric ideas, shopping and to-do lists, my work schedule, and sometimes my homework assignments. It’s more helpful to me then my own agenda book. My other Journal I seldom call a journal, but instead call it my world. It’s a notebook, same as my “Field Journal” but pink. Inside it I write letters to the people of my own little world. Below I have some ideas on how you, too, can start both of these types of journals.

 A Field Journal:

  • Journal. This is the obvious first step. Choose a notebook you can easily carry with you most or all of the time. I don’t suggest one too big, or too small for that matter.
  • Pen. Next, of course, you need a writing utensil. I’d suggest a pen since pencil smears. I personally like to use coloured ball-point pens. I think they just make writing more fun.
  • Content. Finally, what to write? Write whatever you’d like. Work Schedule? Homework assignments? To-do lists? Maybe you’re a poet, song writer, short stories? Write down your ideas or verses. Important dates. Maybe gift ideas. Clothing or jewlery designs? Whatever you love to do and want to write down, go for it!
  • Writing. Write whenever you feel the need to. Whenever an idea pops to mind. Whenever you have something to remember or something to say. Write. Write. Write.

A World:
–this is tons of fun. You can make it whatever you want it to be!–

  • Journal. Once again choose a notebook. Keep in mind where you want to keep it. Will it stay at your bedside? Will you carry it with you?
  • Pen. Repeat of above.
  • Name. Make up a name for your special world or place. Mine is Ile de la Lune, french for Island of the Moon. This should be something that reflects who you are.
  • Map. Maybe you want to draw out a map. If not, maybe you can write out a list at the beginning of key points in your world. I have a mountain range, a lagoon, and forst. I also have my palace and the main village. Be creative with the names and places.
  • Writing. When I write, I write about my day or about my life and thoughts. I write as if I’m writing to my people. Pretend what you write will be posted in the town square, and all of the citizens of your world hang on your every word.

Well, this concludes my lesson on journaling. Now I’m going to go write to my people and complete my to-do lists.
Merry Part.
